Rick Astley ‘Renaissance Man’

Touring with his first production since the late ‘80s, Rick Astley returned with 18 UK arena shows during October and November. Andy Hurst’s show design combined video and lighting to create an unusual ‘chocolate box’ concept. It featured two 12m x 4m Leyard CLM10 screens from UP.

“It’s a brilliant product,” said Video Director Ben Farrey. “The Leyard’s incredibly light weight has been a very important factor, given the smaller venues. I don’t know if we could’ve rigged a screen in half of those places! When we scale down, all I really have to worry about is reorganising the mapping so that I can proportionally reduce the image.”

Farrey worked with programmer Robin Haddow, video engineer Joe Makein and Hammy Patel on cameras, which included a 40x long lens at FOH, a pit camera and two onstage robocams – with Farrey cutting the visuals within a disguise 2x4pro media server.

On working with UP, Farrey commented: “I’ve been very impressed with the quality and preparation of the kit, and they’re all good guys who approach the job correctly. It’s been a real pleasure.”
